From Laß, Fürstin, laß noch einen Strahl, BWV 198, Part I

Johann Sebastian Bach
G major → f sharp minor
11 measures

German text

English translation

Der Glocken bebendes Getön
The quivering sound of the bells
Soll unsrer trüben Seelen Schrecken
Shall excite our ashen souls’ terror
Durch ihr geschwungnes Erze wecken
By their vibrating bronze
Und uns durch Mark und Adern gehn.
And go through our marrow and veins.
O könnte nur dies bange Klingen,
Oh, if only this fearful ringing
Davon das Ohr uns täglich gellt,
That clangs daily in our ears
Der ganzen Europäerwelt
Could bring to the whole European world
Ein Zeugnis unsres Jammers bringen!
A testimony of our misery!
