O Haupt, voll Blut und Wunden,	O Head, full of blood and wounds,
voll Schmerz und voller Hohn!	full of suffering and shame!
O Haupt, zu Spott gebunden	O Head, bound in mockery
mit einer Dornenkron!	with a crown of thorns!
O Haupt, sonst schön gezieret	O Head, once beautifully adorned
Mit höchster Ehr und Zier,	with the highest honor and beauty,
Jetzt aber hoch schimpfieret:	yet now supremely defiled:
Gegrüsset seist du mir!	be greeted by me!

Du edles Angesichte,	You noble countenance,
Dafür sonst schrickt und scheut	before which rather should tremble and cower
Das große Weltgewichte,	the great powers of the world,
Wie bist du so verspeit,	how spat upon are you,
Wie bist du so erbleichet!	How ashen you have become!
Wer hat dein Augenlicht,	Who has treated the light of your eyes,
Dem sonst kein Licht nicht gleichet,	which is like no other light,
so schändlich zugericht’?	so shamefully?
