**He came to earth poor,** |
Wer will die Liebe recht erhöhn, |
Who can rightly exalt this love, |
Die unser Heiland vor uns hegt? |
that our Savior harbors for us? |

**So that He might have sympathy for us,** |

Indeed, who could possibly have predicted |
Wie ihn der Menschen Leid bewegt? |
how the sorrow of humanity moved Him? |
