Da Jammer und Verdruß

where anguish and misery

must torture me alive,

Und kaum will meine Not im Sterben von mir scheiden.

and even in death my torments will scarcely leave me.

[B] Du bist mein Helfer, Trost und Hort,

[B] You are my helper, comfort, and treasure,

So der Betrübten Tränen zählet

who numbers the tears of the troubled,

Und ihre Zuversicht,

and their consolation,

Das schwache Rohr, nicht gar zerbricht;

the pliable reed, not completely broken;

Und weil du mich erwählet,

and since You have chosen me,

So sprich ein Trost—und Freudenwort!

then speak a word of comfort and joy!

[S] Dein Wille zwar ist ein versiegelt Buch,

[S] Your will indeed is a sealed book,

Da Menschenweisheit nichts vernimmt;

that mankind’s wisdom will never grasp;

Der Segen scheint uns oft ein Fluch,

blessing often appears to us as a curse,

Die Züchtigung ergrimmte Strafe,

chastisement as gruesome punishment,

Die Ruhe, so du in dem Todesschlafe

the rest, that one day in the sleep of death

Uns einst bestimmt,

You have appointed for us,

Ein Eingang zu der Hölle.

merely the entrance to hell.

Doch macht dein Geist uns dieses Irrtums frei

Yet Your spirit will free us from these errors

and show us that Your will is healing to us.
