From Dank-Hymne der Freundschaft, H 824e, Part I

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach
D major

German text

English translation

Der Vogel singt’s den Lüften:
The bird is singing it to the breezes:
Wie weise, wie gütig ist er!
How wise, how merciful is He!
Die Herde sagt’s den Triften:
The flock tells it to the pastures:
Wie mild ist unser Herr!
How gentle is our Lord!
Ihm hallt in Wüsteneien
In the desert, the lion’s thanks
des Löwen Dank vom Fels zurück,
are roaring back to Him from the rocks,
und junge Raben schreien
and young ravens are crying
und danken ihm des Lebens Glück.
and thanking Him for the good fortune of their lives.
