Und doch seh ich zurück auf jene Bahn, |
Yet when I look back on the path |
die ich durchwandelte, wie schlüpfrig oft sie war, |
on which I have been treading, how slippery it often was, |
wie mancher Dorn den Fuß verletzte, |
how many a thorn injured my feet, |
wie manche drohende Gefahr |
how many threatening dangers |
des Pilgers Herz in Schrecken setzte. — |
plunged the pilgrim’s heart in fear. — |
Seh ich sie nun dem Vaterlande nahn, |
When I see how my path is nearing its homeland, |
wo ew’ger Frühling herrscht und keine Dornen sprossen |
where there is eternal spring and no thorns grow |
und wo von deiner Huld umflossen |
and where surrounded by your grace |
nur Freud das Herz bewegt, |
nothing but joy moves the heart, |
so jauchz ich, dass ich sie so weit zurückgelegt. |
then I rejoice that I have covered this long distance. |
