Her form at this began to fade, |
And seem’d dissolving into shade. |
In waking starts I vainly press’d |
To clasp her to my panting breast: |
She, pale, from my embrace withdrew, |
And bleeding limbs lay mangled in my view; |
The horrid carnage dogs contending tore, |
And drank with dreadful thirst the floating gore. |
