Latin text

Tuba mirum spargens sonum
per sepulchra regionum,
coget omnes ante thronum.
Mors stupebit et natura,
cum resurget creatura,
judicanti responsura.
Liber scriptus proferetur,
in quo totum continetur,
unde mundus judicetur.
Judex ergo cum sedebit,
quidquid latet apparebit,
nil inultum remanebit.
Quid sum miser tunc dicturus?
quem patronum rogaturus,
cum vix justus sit securus?

Notes

For a detailed discussion of the dating of this work, which was completed before Mozart’s death in 1791 but dated 1792 on the manuscript, see the foreword to NMA I/1, section 2/1. The first system of this movement reproduces two empty staves that appear in the autograph score, intended for basset horn and bassoon but never marked. The string parts are incomplete.
